What is Ingrown Toenail?

What are the symptoms of an ingrown toenail?

Based on the severity, Ingrown toenails can be classified into three stages.

Stage 1

  • Stiffness in toe
  • Mild reddened with swelling
  • Painful to touch

Stage 2

  • Toe end appear becomes increasingly red, swollen.
  • White or yellow-colored pus from the area
  • Constant pain in the area

Stage 3

  • Increased redness, swelling and pain
  • Granulation tissue formation and  increased swelling and discharge of pus
  • Lateral nail-fold hypertrophy
  • Infection with fever 

 

Treatment for ingrown nail

Before heading towards the treatment, it’s important to know that ingrown nail can be easily prevented by taking good care of your feet. Also, mild cases that are stag 1 can be monitored and treated at home with some home remedies such as soaking your feet in warm water, however, if the condition persists for more than 3 days it is advised to visit a doctor. This is because serious cases may need surgical intervention.

How effective is surgical intervention for ingrown nail?

The surgical intervention has highly opted and successful procedure to cure stage 2 and stage 3 ingrown toenail. Here is a brief description of the surgical procedure.

·         The procedure may require Local anesthesia to numb the affected toe.

·         Draining pus from the end of the toe.

·         Removal of the ingrown toenail

·         Electro cautery to  destroy infected cells beneath the area

·         Applying of antibiotic ointment and the toe bandaged up

It takes a weeks’ time to completely heal up, however, you will be relaxed from the pain from the day of treatment.

Other than surgical procedures, chemical treatment is also used to cure ingrown toenails. It is painless procedure and tends to remove the entire toenail.  After removal, an artificial nail is sculptured using formable acrylic solution.
